The Location
Great convenient location for hiking or biking, at the base of Vail Pass.
East Vail is nestled below the dramatic East Vail Chutes. It is a quiet, family friendly place with the ever popular Big Horn off-leash dog park, pond and playground.
It is a fabulous alpinous environment with towering evergreen trees and 14,000 foot mountains seemingly rising out of the valley corridor. Many like the area because a majestic trout stream named Gore Creek meanders through the East Vail neighborhood on its way through the Vail Golf Course and Vail Village. East Vail also is known for its sheer rock cliff faces and beautiful spring waterfalls flowing off Vail Mountain and the Gore Range. Extreme and not so extreme skiers delight in the fabled chutes of East Vail and ice climbers come from miles around to challenge the ice falls in the winter.
Vail is America’s biggest ski resort and boasts an impressive village filled with cute shops and tempting restaurants. Of course, you’ll find all sorts of outdoor gear outfitters, but shoppers will also enjoy the many jewelry, clothing, and art shops.

Visiting During the Season
Vail has been named “the king of American ski resorts” by Forbes. The mountain is huge, with 31 lifts and more than 5,000 acres of skiing, and while Vail is known for its super tough tracks, it really caters to all levels of skiers. One reason so many people enjoy skiing Vail is it sprawls across a single mountain, rather than a range, earning it the honor of “the largest single-mountain resort” in the United States.
But the popular alpine town of Vail is so much more than just skiing. Go high-altitude golfing. Avid golfers say the thinner air affects how your ball flies. Take a scenic drive or take the Eagle Bahn Gondola up the mountain for a panorama of Vail Valley.
Visiting Off-Season or During the Summer
Vail in summer overflows with fantastic off-season activities. Vail’s mountain beauty is undeniable year-round. Hike or bike over to the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens (named after former President Ford’s wife) for some beautiful scents and scenes. The world’s highest botanical garden bursts with flowers in summer.
From zip-lining canopy tours to bungee trampolines, there’s something for adrenaline junkies of of all sorts at Epic Discovery in Vail in summer. There’s even summertime snow-free tubing hills for adults and kids at Epic Discovery. Kids as young as 8 can zip the Golden Eagle line.
For a more mellow activity, you can’t go wrong with a hike on one of Vail’s gorgeous trails. You can go hiking with a llama in Vail with Paragon Guides. Whether you’re a serious mountain biker looking to tackle Vail’s peaks on two wheels, or you want a mellow way to explore Vail, bicycling makes a fun summer activity. Paved trails and mountain trails abound. Saddle up with Vail Stables to hit the horseback trails during your visit.
See Vail from the basket of a hot air balloon. And you’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful location than Vail to experience a balloon ride.
